I say blessed because this year, I am teaching one section of learning strategies and must teach roots, prefixes and suffixes. That means I need help with word work practice to keep this mundane subject interesting!
Enter Word Work for Big Kids!
This great product gives you several choices for activities that can be used with any set of words for practicing and deepening knowledge.
I chose 3 different centers from this product (that has 16 in all!) for this swap and had my students each choose one from those three.
As you can see, we are using Lovin' Lit's Interactive Notebook materials for identifying critical information on word parts and recording our knowledge. The centers helped us practice with these word parts perfectly because they can be used with any word set. Plus they require practical use and deeper thinking about the words or word parts.
But wait, there's more!
This center helps the students identify which parts are prefixes, suffixes or root words. I gave them a word using the word parts we have been studying and it was their job to break it down. There were a few "aha" moments as students debated the difference between prefixes, roots and suffixes as in where each begins and ends. It was a great way to get those critical thinking thoughts cooking!
Last, but not least, is a center that is more general yet very helpful!
This center asks students to write their vocabulary words in the middle of a 3 column chart and then write an antonym and synonym for each word. I chose to write in three words that I wanted the students to work with because we already had these words in our notebooks. They had fun discussing/debating possible answers! Plus they were deepening their knowledge at the same time!
One note: With all 3 centers, I made an answer sheet for my students because they need a bit more structure than the average bear. ;)
I share this because I did not want anyone to assume an answer sheet was included in the product and then be disappointed. Using the notebook to record word work centers would be ideal. That would keep everything together in one neat place!
I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to use this resource. It has truly helped me to add variety and interest to our word work.
